The Rotary Club of Jamestown recently heard of the impact that rail transportation has had on the growth in this area. Ken Springirth has had a lifelong interest in rail transportation. His father and grandfather were trolley car motormen. Springirth is the author of 20 books on railroads and trolley car systems including the book "Remembering the Erie Lackawanna Railroad" which includes the Jamestown, Erie Railroad station. In the next 30 years Springirth believes the need for transportation will double and railroads can fill that need. The Jamestown railroad station was opened in 1932, and the last passenger train left on Jan. 6, 1970. Today it is a destination, an anchor, in a growing community.
