Stepping On: Building Confidence and Reducing Falls is a seven-week program that addresses a variety of ways to reduce the likelihood of falling in older adults, ages 55 and up.
This course is being offered by Heritage Ministries and the Chautauqua County Office for Aging at the new Heritage Living center in Chautauqua Mall, Lakewood.
The classes are interactive and address topics such as improving balance and strength through exercise, vision, medications and home/community safety.
The program will be held on Fridays from Jan. 3 to Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon and will be led by two certified Stepping On instructors.
This program is sponsored by the Center for Disease Control and the New York State Department of Health. Original research was done at the University of Sydney in Australia.
In the United States, the Wisconsin Institute on Healthy Aging is the leader on research and expansion of the program. The course is free, but class size is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
