On behalf of the women volunteers of Creche, I want to thank the Jamestown Community for supporting our recent fund-raising efforts. Our annual Tag Days were spread out this year from May through October on select weekends, and we are so appreciative of the businesses that allowed us to solicit at their locations, especially Brigiotta's and Wal-Mart. Creche's Tag Days had its beginnings during World War II in 1943 when high school students volunteered to stand on the streets of Jamestown asking for donations to "help Creche help a needy child." Today it is still our largest and most successful fund-raiser of the year with over 100 women volunteers participating. We would also like to thank the Jamestown Cycle Shop for donating a Trek Hybrid bike for a summer raffle that allowed us to raise additional money during our Tag Days events. We are grateful for every donor who contributed to Creche during the summer and fall.
We also initiated a new project this fall - the purchasing and filling of 400 new backpacks for children who may have needed one for starting school. We extend a special thank you to three foundations that helped make that project successful: The Johnson Foundation, The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation (Blossom Fund) and The Sheldon Foundation. Without their generous support, we wouldn't have been able to accomplish our goal. We are also grateful that many members and "Friends of Creche" donated toward the project as well. We thank all of them for assisting Creche in helping children in need in our local community. At the present time, between $25,000 and $30,000 is provided each year to help needy children in the Jamestown area, and since Creche is a totally volunteer organization, 100 percent of the money raised goes toward helping local children. Thank you, Jamestown community, for supporting Creche.
