ITHACA-The Jamestown High School indoor track & field teams braved the elements to compete in the Bomber Invitational on Saturday and the athletes made sure to make the trip worthwhile, hitting 12 Section 6 standards, one New York State standard and breaking two school records.
For the girls, Summer Haight won the 55 hurdles with ease in 8.76, qualifying for the Section 6 Championships and missing the NYS standard by two hundredths of a second. Joining her in sectional qualification were Orianne Simon with her sixth place finish in the 55 meter dash (7.69) and Sarah Garvin with her third place finish in the 300 meter dash (43.27). Not to be outdone, Mikayla Capestrani set a new indoor track school record in the pole vault with her winning 10' 6 effort.
The girls 800 meter relay of Summer Haight, Sarah Garvin, Orianne Simon and Shalon Manuel took fourth place in 1:53.28.
For the boys, Steve Nowell led the way, taking fifth place and qualifying for sectionals in the 55 meter hurdles (8.39) and taking second place in the high jump, in which he set a new school indoor record of 6' 0.
Also qualifying for sectionals in two events was Deontae Martin, who hit third place and the sectional standard in the long jump with 19'6, and fifth place in the triple jump with 40'0. Teammate, Jarell Greene also qualified in the triple jump (39' 3) with his eigth place finish.
Da'Quon Hollingsworth (6.84) and Henry Tapia (6.85) both qualified for sectionals in the 55 meter dash, taking fifth and sixth place respectively, while Austen Johnson (1:31.12) qualified in the 600 meter dash.
Teammate Awsten Beaver qualified in the pole vault with a personal best of 12' 6 and a third place finish.
The boys 3200 meter relay team of Patrick Walsh, Jonathan Healy, Christian Edborg and Matthew Lombardo took home third place in 9:04.76, while the 800 meter relay team of Da'Quon Hollingsworth, Deontae Martin, Henry Tapia and Awsten Beaver grabbed sixth place.
