LAKEWOOD-Four area police departments - including the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office and the Jamestown Police Department- were honored Tuesday with AAA's Platinum Community Traffic Safety Award for their safety activities.
According to AAA East Central, the annual award, which has been given out for approximately 15 years, honors law enforcement officers who strive to reduce traffic fatalities with educational programs and promotional campaigns.
"(The police) are outstanding," said Terri Rae Anthony, AAA safety advisor, who handed out the awards during a luncheon at the Olive Garden on Fairmount Avenue. "This is just a small token of our appreciation for those who are really trying to keep the community safe."

Anthony praised the agencies for their ongoing partnerships, insisting that "good working relationships" were one of the primary reasons for their success.
"We really have to work together, and it's so nice that they do so well," Anthony said.
"We are very aggressive in enforcing traffic safety, (and we want to maintain) that goal of keeping Chautauqua County drivers and their families safe. I'm proud to be a part of that."
Sheriff Joseph Gerace
Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace appreciated the recognition, and reemphasized his commitment to safe driving.
"I think it's wonderful that AAA makes an effort to recognize law enforcement," Gerace said. "We are very aggressive in enforcing traffic safety, (and we want to maintain) that goal of keeping Chautauqua County drivers and their families safe. I'm proud to be a part of that."
