Robert Guiffreda, a leader in education for most of his life, lost his battle with cancer in October. Upon his passing, his family decided the best way to honor his memory, and passion, was with a scholarship designed to support local students furthering their education.
The Robert Guiffreda Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance to students graduating from Panama Central School. A priority will be given to students pursuing a degree in math or science.
According to his family, Guiffreda always felt education was very important and that an educated person could do anything.
Randy Sweeney, Community Foundation executive director, meets with Frances Frey, Panama Central School elementary principal, Cindy Guiffreda, Tony Guiffreda, Natalie Swanson, and Dane Simmons, Panama Central School guidance counselor, to establish the Robert Guiffreda Memorial Scholarship Fund.
A graduate of Panama Central School, Guiffreda attended Jamestown Community College and received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from SUNY Fredonia. He also earned degrees in education and administration.
After a career that included serving as a teacher, assistant principal and superintendent at Southwestern Central School, high school principal for Chautauqua Lake Central School, and superintendent of Frontier Central School, Guiffreda retired in December 2011. He last served as district superintendent of Erie 2 Chautauqua Cattaraugus BOCES.
In addition to his involvement in the local school districts, Guiffreda also dedicated his time to a number of civic and community organizations throughout southern Chautauqua County.
