Joyce C. Axelson went home to be with the Lord on Friday (Dec. 6, 2013), at her home on Church Road, with her family caring for her. Joyce previously lived on Frew Run.
She was born Jan. 10, 1938 in Erie, Pa., and was adopted by Harold and Hilda Hallquist Connelly of Jamestown.
Joyce C. Axelson
Joyce graduated from Jamestown High School with the class of 1956. She married Skip Axelson on Aug. 27, 1960.
She had worked in local banks and was one of the first bank tellers in the Frewsburg branch.
Joyce was a tremendous baker, knitter, and enjoyed doing cross stitch and craft projects.
She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, Holy Trinity in Jamestown and Zion Lutheran Church in Frewsburg.
She was presently attending Kiantone Congregational Church.
Besides her husband Skip, Joyce is survived by two sons: Scott Axelson, who recently moved back from Milford, N.H., and Mark Axelson of Jamestown; two nephews: Kevin Wright of Lancaster, N.Y., and Shawn Wright of Jackson, Ky.; and two nieces: Sue Warden of Jamestown, and Beth Culver of Frewsburg.
For the last three years of her Alzheimer's, Joyce constantly carried a picture of Brandon Wright in her pocket. For some reason known only to God, she bonded with him and called him her "buddy."
She was predeceased by her daughter, Wendy Sue Axelson, who was killed by a drunk driver on Nov. 27, 1992. Joyce was an advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. She was also preceded by a brother, Robert Connelly.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg. The Rev. Mel McGinnis, pastor of the Kiantone Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Frewsburg.
The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. Sunday in the funeral Home.
