With the recent implementation of the Common Core State Standards, fifth-grade students have been combining their ELA and social studies skills. Students have been studying selected articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and their impact throughout U.S. History. A historical background time line was constructed to visually connect events and setting to the ELA novel "Esperanza Rising." Partner groups researched, created and reported on the various historical events. Connections between human rights, historical events and the novel will continue to be made throughout this unit of study.
