YMCA To Offer Karate Classes
The Jamestown YMCA will offer youth karate for students ages 5 to 15 years and adult karate starting Dec. 17 through Feb. 13. The classes will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. for youth and 5:30-7 p.m. for adults. Christina Kebort, a seventh-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate, will teach students self-esteem, respect, confidence, discipline and self-defense. She has more than 13 years of experience in the karate arena. The youth class cost is $40 for YMCA members and $60 for potential members, and the adult class cost is $40 for YMCA members and $65 for potential members. A well-stocked St. Luke's Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St., Jamestown, is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for sales and receiving this Saturday. The extended hours are offered for holiday shoppers as well as people looking for winter clothing. Parking is available in the church parking lot off East Fifth Street. Regular winter hours for sales and receiving are Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a nonprofit enterprise run by local volunteers with many from RSVP. Proceeds are used for outreach in the community.
Forum To Talk Christmas Values
"Christmas, Truth and Barack Obama" will be presented at the Prendergast Library in Jamestown at 7 p.m. Monday. The presentation will examine the necessity, value and relevance of preserving Christmas. The presentation will be given by the Rev. Mel McGinnis for Veritas First, a local apologetics group in the Jamestown area.
Christmas Event Set For Lakewood
LAKEWOOD - All are invited to the village of Lakewood on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Christmas in the Village. The village will be festively decorated, and the merchants along Chautauqua Avenue will be giving discounts to Christmas shoppers. There will be free refreshments in the Busti-Lakewood Recreation Center on Summit Avenue where vendors and crafters will be set up and evergreen wreaths and swags will be sold. There will be a lighting of the Christmas tree in Hartley Park, and the arrival of Santa Claus. All proceeds benefit the Lakewood Memorial Library and the club's scholarship fund.
Seniors To Plan Dec. 12 Trip
Jamestown Senior Center members attending a trip to Cambridge Springs on Dec. 12 will leave the parking lot at 10:15 a.m. Dues will be collected in January and all members must renew. Thirty-two seniors met recently for a tureen dinner. Shirley Vandenburg, activities director, called the meeting to order with a flag salute and song. Alice Bennett was welcomed and birthdays acknowledged.
Christmas Lights Trip Planned
On Tuesday, Dec. 10 and Wednesday, Dec. 11, Westfield residents will be traveling to Wheeling, W.Va., to view the Christmas lights display at Oglebay Park and to visit the Mansion Museum, Glass Museum and the Kruger Toy & Train Museum. Included is one night's lodging, breakfast and a holiday dinner show. A stop at Cabela's is also planned.
