SALAMANCA - Contracts with the City of Salamanca Police Department and employees of the city's Public Works Department have been made whole after a vote of the Common Council to ratify agreements made on back pay at the recent regular board meeting.
Officers in the city's police department were owed back wages for a period between April 1, 2011, to March 31, 2012. The fiscal year pay increases were not able to be honored as the contract with CSEA Local 1000 AFSCME, AFL-CIO, the union to which the city police force belongs, was expired.
The agreement pays 3 percent of an officer's wage during the fiscal year in question. In total, the agreement with the police department pays out $15,334, spread over 13 officers.
A similar agreement was reached with the members of the AFSCME Local 1304-C, the union that represents the City of Salamanca Department of Public Works employees. For the same reasons as the police union members, however, the public works employees will only incur a cost of $8,536 spread over eight employees.
"We needed to do this to be able to satisfy our contractual obligations to these employees," Mayor Carmen Vecchiarella said.
In another measure, members of the Common Council voted to remove six properties form the tax rolls throughout the city, as is the policy when Native Americans purchase real estate within city limits. The six properties, totalling $31,365, will result in $1,791.08 that will come off the tax rolls, $74.41 that will come off the county taxes, as well.
The next regular meeting of the Salamanca Common Council will be held Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in the courtroom of the Ronald Yehl Municipal Building, 225 Wildwood Ave. A meeting of the public works committee will be held that same night at 6:15.
