SYRACUSE - Sophomore quarterback Jake Zembiec completed 13-of-20 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns to lead Aquinas of Section 5 to a 48-13 victory over Monroe-Woodbury to claim the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA football championship on Sunday night at the Carrier Dome.
Aquinas (13-0), which trailed 7-0 less than three minutes into the game, led 27-7 at halftime and 33-13 after three quarters before turning the game into a rout with a pair of fourth-quarter TDs.
The win improved Aquinas' record to 13-0, while Monroe-Woodbury (12-1) suffered its first loss.
Zembiec's three touchdown passes all went to Alonzo Turney from 53, 7 and 47 yards. Earnest Edwards returned an interception 60 yards, Jamir Jones had a pick-six from 30 yards out, and Luc Pietropaolo and Joe Biscardi had TD runs of 1 and 20 yards respectively.
Aquinas defeated Jamestown, 48-34, in the Far West Regional and Elmira Southside, 19-6, in the semifinal on its road to the Carrier Dome.
