More specifically, the Maple Grove High School sophomore will be in the Bronx, running in the Foot Locker Northeast Regional 5K at Van Cortlandt Park.
Pietrocarlo, the Section 6 and New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D champion, will be competing against athletes from New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, D.C., and U.S. citizens in overseas military installation.
The competition figures to be stiff.
According to the event's website, the regional record for the girls was set by Cathy Schiro in 1984 when she toured the course in a blistering 16 minutes, 46 seconds. Donn Cabral holds the boys record (15:09), which he set in 2007.
The top 10 from the four regional races across the country advance to the national championships, which will be held Dec. 14 at Morley Field at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif.
Pietrocarlo's latest opportunity comes on the heels of an outstanding fall season during which she became the first runner in Maple Grove history to capture a state individual cross country title when she toured the 5,000-meter course at Queensbury High School in 18:29.5 to win by nearly 24 seconds.
Pietrocarlo also won the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association and Section 6 championships earlier this month.
