Three players from the area have been nominated for the 2013 Connolly Cup, which will be presented by the Riverside Athletic Club next month.
Senior quarterback Jake Sisson of Jamestown and running backs Chris Doubek of Randolph and Matt McCarthy of Fredonia are among the 10 Western New York players nominated.
Sisson set a Jamestown record with 32 touchdown passes and added 24 more on the ground for Jamestown (10-1), which lost, 48-34 decision to No. 1 Aquinas of Section 5 in the Class AA Far West Regional.
Doubek, a senior, has rushed for 31 touchdowns and 2,263 yards, leading the Cardinals to a second straight New York State Class D championship game next Friday at noon against Chester (10-1) at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The Cardinals have won 22 in a row over a two-year span.
McCarthy, a junior, was named Player of the Year in Class C South in leading Fredonia to a 9-1 record. The Hillbillies lost in the Section 6 championship for the second straight year to Cleveland Hill, 22-13.
Quarterbacks Tyler Mascio of South Park and Brian Stoldt of Alden, along with running backs Brandon Thomas of Cleveland Hill, Qadree Ollison of Canisius, Nigel Davis of St. Joseph's, Austin Lauricella of Akron and Lyle Grant of Alden are the other Connolly Cup candidates. All are seniors except for Grant, who is a sophomore.
