SHERMAN - A group of Sherman Central School students will be offering a community fundraiser in the form of a babysitting opportunity.
On Saturday, Dec. 7, the Sherman chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions club will be hosting a Christmas babysitting opportunity for area parents looking for a few hours to themselves, or for a chance to get some gift shopping done.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the SCS cafeteria.
Pictured are members of the Sherman Central School chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions, who will be participating in the district’s inaugural Christmas babysitting fundraiser Dec. 7. In front, from left, are: Brittany Haskins; Karly Rhebergen; Jackie Smith, vice president; Allison McKillip; and Kaylee Thornton. In the second row are: Elise Schack; Hillary Norton; Alexis Oehlbeck, secretary; and Grace Meyer, treasurer. In back are: Kristy Collver, adviser; Katrina Christmas; Jordan Boland, president; Katelyn Tenpas; and Cadi Hannold.
The proceeds will go toward providing a drug- and alcohol-free afterprom party later this school year.
Any children - not just those within the Sherman school district - ages 2 through 12 are welcome, and members of the SADD club will be on hand to provide a safe morning and afternoon of activities, including a movie, a sing-a-long and graham cracker decorating.
According to Kristy Collver, Sherman's SADD club adviser, this is the inaugural SADD Christmas babysitting event, but she has hopes that it will help to pave the way for more fundraising opportunities.
"This is the first year we are doing this fundraiser," Collver said. "We try to look for ways to raise money that don't involve selling something, since most people are exhausted from sales from other groups and organizations. We are hoping that this will be the first of many fundraisers like this in our community."
Although a complete meal will not be provided to children, parents can drop their students off with a bagged meal. Snacks consisting of graham crackers, frosting and candies for decorating, goldfish and juice will also be available. If other arrangements need to be made for a snack or lunch based on the child, that can be indicated on the registration form.
To register, contact Collver via email at email@example.com, or by phone at 761-6121, ext. 4216, by Tuesday, Dec. 3. The cost is $15 per child, with a limit of $50 per family for more than four children. For safety purposes, only the person designated on the registration form can drop off or pick up a child. It is suggested that parents have identification in order to prevent confusion.
Preceding the babysitting event is the district's annual Breakfast with Santa event, which will also be held in the SCS cafeteria and will begin at 9 a.m. Collver said parents are welcome to bring their children to the breakfast, and then have them stay for the babysitting time through 3 p.m.
"We will have certified first-aid, CPR and AED adults on hand, as well as Red Cross-certified babysitters as part of the group of volunteers that will be watching the kids," Collver said. "All kids, even those not in the Sherman district, are welcome, and we are an easy stopping point on the way to Erie for shopping."
