Retired Jamestown Community College sociology professor Jeffrey Victor will present "What You Need to Know about Islam in Politics" at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1255 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown.
Dr. Victor will discuss Islamic religion in politics, particularly in relation to the wars in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, using principles drawn from the sociology of religion.
He will explain the conflict between Sunni and Shiite Muslims and their financial backers in Saudi Arabia and Iran as well as Islamic beliefs about religion in government, the treatment of non-Islamic minorities, and increasing Islamic fundamentalism.
Victor, who traveled recently in Morocco, will also provide insights into the possibility of democracy in Islamic countries after Arab Spring. He will also examine the concept of separation of religion and government in Islamic countries under Sharia Law.
Victor has authored two books and published 27 articles in professional journals.
