SHERMAN - Community members will gather to support a Panama resident Thursday.
A pasta benefit dinner will be held from 4-8 p.m. for Kathy Peck of Panama at the Stanley Hose Company Fire Department at 122 Park St. in Sherman.
For the past 10 years, Peck fought against a failing liver, unable to manage her life as a wife, mother and grandmother. She tires easily and employment no longer can be a viable option.
"Kathy has been a good friend to many of us over the last 10 years, and she and her husband have been great supporters of the Panama community," Carol Hay said. "And since she had all these health issues, we feel it would be nice to give back to an individual who has given so much to the community."
Peck took an active role in many activities, including the Panama United Methodist Church, cheerleader adviser for Panama Central School, and sporting events when her children still went to school.
"Whenever there was anything going on in the past when Kathy was healthy enough to be of help - whether there was a benefit for somebody, the fire department was doing something - Kathy always volunteered to help in any way she could," said Hay.
Peck's health condition can change quickly, despite the help of her husband, Bill, multiple medications and numerous physician visits in Jamestown, Rochester and Cleveland. Currently Peck joined the liver transplant list through Cleveland Clinic, however, Peck and her husband incurred out of pocket expenses related to her medical condition. Additional expenses will incur during her medical journey after the transplant.
The benefit aims to raise funds in order help with Peck's expenses relating to her medical care, upcoming surgery and recovery. Dinner tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children and free for those less than 4 years old. During the event, giveaways and Chinese auction will also help raise money.
