SANBORN - The Jamestown Community College Lady Jayhawks (29-7) earned the top seed after pool play in the NJCAA Region 3 Division III volleyball championships on Saturday.
The team posted victories over Herkimer CC, 25-20, 15-25, 25-21; Finger Lakes, 25-11, 13-25, 25-18; and SUNY Adirondack, 15-25, 25-21, 25-19.
The final match for JCC against Adirondack was a come-from-behind victory after going down in the opening set. Christina Rauh helped the Lady Jayhawks to come back from the deficit with two aces, 21 assists, five kills, one dig and one block. Shannon Gunnell made one ace, nine kills, and four digs in addition to one ace, seven kills, and six digs from Mandy Finch. Michelle Bach rounded the set out with three kills.
In the opening match against Herkimer, JCC was led by Rauh with one ace, 14 assists, nine kills and nine digs. Gunnell posted eight kills, four digs, and one block, while Finch added three aces, seven kills, and five digs.
Facing Finger Lakes in their second test of the day, the Lady Jayhawks were once again led by Rauh with 22 assists, four kills, and one dig. Gunnell recorded two aces, eight kills, and three digs, while Finch made seven kills and seven digs. Arrica Lis had four kills and one dig.
Today, the Lady Jayhawks will move into the semifinals of the tournament and face second-seeded Corning at 11 a.m.
After putting on three dominant performances, Rauh was awarded first-team All-Region honors, while Gunnell was a second-team selection.
