FALCONER - The Falconer Central School Board of Education kicked off its annual meeting tour of the district with a visit to Temple Elementary School last week.
According to Stephen Penhollow, superintendent, the tour provides an opportunity for board members to witness some of the initiatives in the district and interact with some of its teachers.
"Board members were able to walk around and talk to the teachers and view some of the classrooms," Penhollow said. "It's always positive to have our teachers there and allow our board members to have good communications with them because we're always looking for ways to improve the quality education that we try to provide to our students."
The board will visit Fenner Elementary School at its next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 5.
At the meeting, board members were also recognized for their service and dedication to the district as they made preparations for the observance of New York State School Boards Recognition Week, which will be held from Oct. 28 through Nov. 1.
Penhollow said the board also appointed a new member to replace Elizabeth Short, a longtime board member who filed her resignation last month. Because the selected candidate will not be sworn in until the next board meeting, Penhollow declined to comment further.
New business included the approval of a marching band trip from Saturday through Monday to compete at the Phoenix competition and the NYSFBC championships in Syracuse.
Personnel appointments included Ashley Carlson, Beth Faulkner and Rebecca Mullen to the substitute teaching list, Cynthia Vullo to the substitute non-teaching list for the areas of office and teacher aide and Dennis Hinsdale as volunteer coaching assistant for the 2013-14 season.
A maternity leave request from Michaeline Rizzo was also approved, tentatively beginning Nov. 15 and with an anticipated return date of eight weeks from the delivery date.
