Irene M. Lawn, 83, passed away Oct. 20, 2013, at the Commonwealth Hospice Unit at Scranton Regional Hospital.
She earned her registered nurse degree from St. Paul's School of Nursing in Dallas, Texas. A devout Catholic, she had been a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Church for many years, served as president of Mother's Club of St. Peter and Paul School (Holy Family), active in the National Organization for Women, and an organizer of La Leche League in Jamestown. Along with her husband, she was co-chair of the Christian Family Movement, and active in the local civil rights movement. In 1998, they were recipients of the T. Richard Parker Award for Social Justice presented by the Unitarian Church, and was a member of the board of directors of the YWCA.
Following her husband's retirement, they traveled extensively, and later relocated to Factoryville, Pa. Irene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. George W. Lawn, whom she married Oct. 30, 1950; six daughters: Mary Truitt, Factoryville, Pa., Charlotte Wiley, New York City, Rita Meacham, Farrell, Pa., Teresa Cortright, Jamestown, N.Y., Janet Lawn, Quincy, Mass., Wilma Lawn, Zanesville, Ohio; three sons: Mark, Tiburon, Calif., John, Manlius, N.Y., and Gregory, Missouri City, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters; and a brother.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Church of Our Lady of The Abingtons. Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m., Friday in Anthony P. Litwin Jr. Funeral Homes Inc., Factoryville, Pa.
