David Basil, manager of Robert Basil Chevrolet Buick & Cadillac in Fredonia, and driver Dale Helped granted 81-year-old Hospice Chautauqua County patient Ernest Krzyzanowski's last wish to ride around town in a convertible, which is something that he has always wanted to do.
Inspired by his story, Basil and the dealership allowed Dale - their driver - to take "Ernie" on a cruise around Fredonia. Ernie and Dale cruised around town in a 2010 black Corvette convertible.
Along with the ride, the dealership donated a convertible toy car (resembling the car they drove), a baseball cap, and a certificate. When offered the choice of where to go for his last journey, most would think of exotic locations, but, for Ernie it was just around the block. Ernie just wanted to take one last drive and see what construction was consuming the streets.
Rachel Smith, Social Worker, Ernie Krzyzanowski and Connie, Ernie’s daughter, are pictured.
When Basil learned of his wish, he was eager to help. Hospice social worker, Rachel Smith said, "My job entails me driving in a car every day. However, I never realized how much I take it for granted. Until I saw just how much happiness it brought through a dying man's eyes."
As Rachel and Ernie's daughter, Connie, watched the two zip down the road, they were touched as Ernie smiled from ear to ear. Hospice Chautauqua County would like to send a special thank you to Robert Basil Chevrolet Buick & Cadillac dealership of Fredonia, including the staff for their warm reception and selfless act.
Hospice Chautauqua County goes above and beyond to ensure patients and family members have a chance at making one last memory, have one last hope, while keeping their dignity and being comfortable at their end of life.
