Fluency is a word that parents have heard in conjunction with English Language Arts but it is also used in math. The Common Core Learning Standards not only measure how a student understands math concepts but also, whether students can perform calculations and solve problems quickly and accurately, or fluently. It is similar to when someone is fluent in a foreign language. When you are fluent, there isn't halting, stumbling or trying to find the right word, you flow. In math, fluent students can perform the required math problems quickly and accurately with no hesitation.
The Common Core Learning Standards expect that students will learn one or two math fluencies by the end of each grade level.
