To The Reader's Forum:
100 years ago Woodrow Wilson signed the 1913 Federal Reserve Act.
A few years later he wrote: "I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit."
So, after 100 years, we have to realize that courses taken so long ago cannot be reversed in one sweeping motion: the government shutdown and the refusal to raise the debt ceiling. Why, after all these years, have we come so close to self-destruction under this one particular president? Why is he hated so much by the far right that they are willing to destroy the world economy, literally overnight?
It is time we take a deep breath and take our time with everyone involved, to learn how to tighten our belt without hurting the poorest of the poor first, as has been the routine every time cuts happen. The sequester alone has hurt millions of our poor, and now the tea party wants more blood from the turnip.
It is time for the few to stop ruling the many.
