CANANDAIGUA - Nick Kahanic's storybook Highland Games career keeps getting better and better.
The latest chapter was written over the weekend at the Bristol Mountain Fall Festival & Highland Games at the Bristol Mountain Ski Resort.
The Falconer resident won all seven events, posting personal bests in the heavy weight for distance (45 feet, 9 inches) and the heavy stone (50-1).
The throw in the heavy stone, also known as the braemar, would have been a new pro North American record by 3 feet, 1 inch, but the stone was 9 ounces too light to qualify for the mark. Still, the performance put Kahanic in some very select company.
"With those improvements,'' he said, "it puts my ranking score over 8,000 points, which makes me the first amateur in three years to break 8,000. It also secures my spot in the top five-ranked pros in North America.''
In addition, Kahanic has been named the North Captain in the North vs. South Battle in January. The event pits the top five Highland Games athletes from the northern United States against their top-five counterparts from the southern U.S.
"It's a huge honor,'' he said. "Every day I get encouragement from a different person, and that really makes training to be the best an exciting and enjoyable journey."
