Zumba toning classes are offered at the Lakewood YMCA at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and at the Jamestown YMCA at 4 p.m. Thursdays.
The class is a fusion of muscular endurance and cardiovascular fitness which can burn calories and challenge the body in new ways. Zumba toning features the use of 1 to 2.5 pound toning sticks to perform strength training exercises which are imbedded into Zumba dances. The toning sticks are used to enhance rhythm and tone target areas including arms, legs, chest, abs and legs. Zumba toning classes are different than that of regular Zumba fitness classes, but similar to Zumba. No previous dance experience is necessary.
"Zumba toning is a wonderful option to add to your fitness program to remain active, fit and loving it," said Cynthia McIntyre, course instructor. "One of the largest obstacles to sustaining personal fitness is finding enough fun and variety in activities to make them a lifetime choice. What Zumba toning classes offer is the opportunity to vary and diversify your workouts. For complete health, we all (especially women) need strength training. You won't, however, bulk up in Zumba Toning as the toning sticks are not heavy enough. Rather, Zumba Toning is the perfect way to accelerate fat loss and sculpt your body naturally while having a good time moving and dancing to music from around the world. My own personal and student experience with Zumba Toning has demonstrated its value in creating and sustaining lean muscle mass. We have measured our BMI and lifestyle task strength experiences and have enjoyed improvement - some from a low baseline and some from a fairly fit starting point. All of this in a relaxed, fun atmosphere."
Classes are free for YMCA members. Non-members can pay per class or purchase an eight weeks aerobics package. For more information regarding Zumba toning or other group exercise offerings available through the YMCA, call 664-2802 or visit jamestownymca.org.
