Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

September 21, 2013
The Post-Journal

Thumbs up to Deb Palmer, the longtime Panama Central School girls volleyball and softball coach. Palmer, who also taught elementary physical education during her time at Panama, was honored by Section 6 with its Chautauqua County Sportsmanship award for the 2012-13 school year. Palmer coached the varsity volleyball team last season and resigned after more of 30 years of coaching. In volleyball she recorded 12 division championships, four sectional titles and one regional title. In softball, Palmer equaled her division championships with 12, but also won six sectional titles. Even more important than the wins and losses was the impact Palmer made for decades in the lives of Panama youth whether she coached them in athletics or not. She is the epitome of what a high school coach should be.
