Community members gathered together to discuss ideas and concepts that will hopefully lead to a better tomorrow.
On Thursday, the Jamestown Strategic Planning and Partnerships Commission invited community residents to a planning session at the Sarita Weeks Room in the Arts and Sciences Building at Jamestown Community College. The Strategic Planning and Partnerships Commission is a volunteer group that meets throughout the year to study and discuss various methods of improving life in the community. The group forms smaller "action teams" to progress the goals set by the commission.
During the community meeting, a breakout session was held for community residents to discuss ideas under several topics. The topics included education; financial stability/economic vitality; health and wellness/public safety; education; community engagement; and arts/culture. Time was given so each attendee, which included around 50 people, could go to any topic or topics to share their ideas on improving different aspects of the community. The ideas from the public brainstorming session will be discussed by the Strategic Planning and Partnership Commission to develop 2013-14 priorities and goals. Commission topics in the past year have included: the Jamestown Urban Design Plan, neighborhood initiatives, leadership diversity, education, regionalism, "Brain Gain" and health care.

Under education, one of the ideas for improvement included increasing the number of JCC degrees and providing more scholarship opportunities; more mentoring programs was one of the goals under community engagement; more green incentives and improved workforce training were ideas under economic vitality/financial stability; more public art like a sculpture park was a focus under arts/culture; and more merging of police forces was an idea under health and wellness/public safety.
Jamestown Mayor Sam Teresi appoints commission members who represent various organizations and aspects of community life, such as: the Jamestown School District, WCA Hospital, local churches, Jamestown Community College, city industries, local foundations, the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation, the Downtown Jamestown Development Corporation, private citizens, city government and the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities. Co-chairs of the commission include Northwest Savings Bank official Jennifer Gibson and Jamestown City Council President Greg Rabb.
