From not knowing what to do after high school, Mike Giunta has come a long way in 50 years.
Giunta is the owner of Salon 1, which has two city locations with one in the Southside Plaza along Foote Avenue and the other in the Third Street Plaza. Giunta said his father, Frank, steered him in the direction that has led him to a long career in cutting hair.
"I didn't know what I wanted to do right out of high school. I didn't feel like going to college. My father, who was a barber, said, 'Why don't you go to barber school?'" Giunta said. "So I went to Buffalo to school for a year, and that is when men's hair styling started to come into play."

From there, Giunta teamed with Rich Pacitti in 1963 to introduce men's hair styling to the Jamestown area.
"At the time, there were only barbers. We brought men's hair styling to the area, and it just took off," he said.
Giunta said to improve his skills he would continue his education by training at the Paul Mitchell school in New York. He said their he learned precision hair cutting for all varieties of hair styles and conditions. In 1976, the two business partners started Towne Barbers.
"We opened up a real beauty salon. It was a first-class salon," Giunta said.
Then in 1984, Giunta went out on his own as a salon owner opening Price Cutters in the Southside Plaza along Foote Avenue. Through the years the business continued to grow, and the name was changed to Salon 1. Then in 2010, Giunta opened a second Salon 1 location in the Third Street Plaza.
"We have a lot of fun. It is a great business," he said. "It is one of the best to be in. We make people beautiful. There is nothing better than when someone comes in, and they're not feeling well, and then they walk out a short time later feeling great. I've met a lot of wonderful people in this business."
Giunta said his businesses have 21 employees. He said each hair stylist has many hours of training to provide quality service to each client.
"I don't think they get the credit they deserve. It takes a lot of training and dedication to be a good hair stylist," he said.
For Giunta's 50th anniversary, he said he wants to thank the community for their loyalty. Starting Monday, there will be a 50 percent discount on all services and retail items in both Salon 1 locations. He said each customer who comes into the business will be given a gift, and there will also be prize giveaways.
"I just want to say, 'Thank you,'" he said.
Both Salon 1 locations are open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call the Southside Plaza location at 483-6000 and the Third Street Location at 483-2422.
