Thumbs up to the quick clean-up after Monday's microburst storm that brought high winds, hail and buckets of rain to the Lakewood area. Neighbors pitched in to help each other in the midst of the damage while the village Public Works Department, led by Tom Pilling, and the volunteer firefighters and Lakewood-Busti police officers who responded deserve credit for their yeomanlike work this week. No one was severely hurt in the storm.
Thumbs down to the continuing issue surrounding U.S. Rep. Tom Reed and his tax payments. In late August, Reed admitted being late paying his property taxes 38 times since 2005, including 18 times since joining Congress in 2010, though all the taxes and penalties ended up being paid in full. Then, new reports showed Reed had used a campaign bank account to pay late personal property taxes in 2012 - which Reed attributed to a clerical error because the accounts use nearly identical checks from the same bank. No harm was done to anything but Reed's reputation, but the Corning Republican should redouble his efforts to make sure such sloppy behavior doesn't happen again.
Thumbs up to a happy 20th anniversary for the Jamestown Jammers - and a return to playoff baseball. The Jammers grabbed the wild card playoff position and began the postseason Friday against the State College Spikes. The series continues today in State College with an if-necessary third game on Sunday in State College. Thumbs up as well to Adam Frazier, who was honored as The Post-Journal most valuable player, and Chad Kuhl, voted The Post-Journal most valuable pitcher.
