The Jamestown Police Department has taken ownership of a new rifle, thanks to a donation from a local business.
Bruce Piatz, owner of M&M Sports Den in Jamestown, donated the Bushmaster XM-15 rifle to Police Chief Harry Snellings on Wednesday. The rifle is valued at $1,500.
Piatz said he wanted to thank city police for their service.

"I really respect the Jamestown Police Department," he said. "I just wanted to help out because they are always doing things for help me and my business."
Piatz said this is the first time he has made a donation to police, and noted the time felt right. "They do such a great job for the community," he said.
Snellings said the rifle will be assigned to the department's tactical unit - more specifically to the sniper observation team. Costs of similar weapons makes the donation financially beneficial to the police department, he said.
"The financial savings for us is great," Snellings said. "When we buy guns we obviously get them at a lower rate. So this saves us $1,000, which is $1,000 that I can use for other equipment for the agency."
"We appreciate when we get donations from the community," he said. "It says a lot and I want to thank Bruce for making this donation."
The rifle will be put into service immediately.
