The Southern Tier Trans Network, a regional group organized to provide peer support to the local transgender community, recently announced a new partnership with the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County. The immediate effect of this partnership will be bimonthly support group meetings for the transgender community, meeting every first and third Friday of the month, at 7 p.m.
"While being trans is not in itself a mental health issue, the discrimination, abuse and oppression that most trans people face in our society can and does induce mental stresses that can harm our mental health," said Helen Walther, Southern Tier Trans Network coordinator. "The need for support is obvious and we are grateful to the MHA for their willingness to share resources and other means of support to this underserved community in Jamestown as well as the rest of Chautauqua County."
Meetings will be kept confidential and safe. Members of the transgender community who want to participate should contact the group via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com in order to arrange a pre-meeting interview.
