BUSTI - The grassroots organization aiming to improve the hamlet area of Busti is once again inviting all to a chicken barbecue.
The Busti-Hamlet Development Group's chicken dinner will start at 4 p.m. Saturday at the gazebo next to the Busti Fire Department, 886 Mill Road. Jesse Robbins, Busti supervisor, said 400 chicken dinners will be served at $10 apiece, with presale tickets available prior to Saturday by calling 664-2060. The dinner includes half a chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, corn on the cob, a roll and a drink.
''It is a big meal. If you leave hungry, something is wrong,'' Robbins said.
Robbins said other events around the barbecue include the Busti Federated Church, located at 875 Mill Road, hosting its ''Family Fun Day'' starting at noon; the Wind River Bluegrass Band will play at 7 p.m.; the Busti ''Citizen of the Year'' will be announced; there will be a 50/50 drawing; and there will be a bird feeder giveaway.
''There will also be a pie baking contest, and an open house at the fire department," Robbins said.
The chicken dinner is the main fundraiser for the Busti-Hamlet Development Group. The group was formed in 2008 with the ambition to improve the hamlet portion of the town of Busti. Residents began meeting and pooling ideas for ways to pump life into their community. Through the years, the money raised from the chicken dinner has gone toward the veterans monument; the gazebo; ''Citizen of the Year'' benches; grave stone repair; and for the flag pole at the Hazeltine Public Library, 891 Busti-Sugar Grove Road.
''We don't keep the money, it goes into projects,'' Robbins said. ''We've done a lot of little projects to make things look better.''
Robbins said the next projects money will go toward buying more benches and for low-density lights in the hamlet triangle.
Besides benefiting a community organization, Robbins said people should attend the barbecue to get to know their neighbor.
''It is important for people to get together to show their town spirit,'' he said. ''People don't even know their own neighbor anymore, and it shouldn't be that way. You should be able to know your neighbor and help your neighbor, and your neighbor should help you. That is the way it used to be. One thing Busti is still good at is if someone is in trouble, and there is a benefit, there is a lot of participation.''
