BUSTI - A race car driver died Saturday night after a medical condition caused him to crash at Stateline Speedway in Busti.
John M. Kelsey, 50, of Jamestown, was pronounced dead at WCA Hospital by Chautauqua County Coroner James Jackson. Following an investigation, Lakewood-Busti police said Kelsey was racing at the Kortwright Road dirt track when he lost consciousness and struck a wall.
A Stateline Speedway spokesman said the crash took place shortly after the E-Mod race began at 10 p.m., but declined further comment. A spectator told The Post-Journal that Kelsey's F18 modified car did not appear to strike the wall at a high rate of speed or sustain significant damage.
Police said the crash did not contribute to Kelsey's death; a police report cited a pre-existing medical condition as causing the accident.
The coroner could not be reached for comment Sunday.
Lakewood-Busti police were assisted by Alstar Ambulance, the Busti Fire Department and Starflight helicopter. The investigation is closed, police said.
No further information regarding the incident was available by press time.
