The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy is sponsoring a hiking tour of the beaver swamp at the Chautauqua Creek East Branch Preserve on Route 430 in Chautauqua (opposite Red Wing Road) on Friday, at 9:30 a.m. This preserve is in the headwaters of the watershed that supplies the village of Westfield with its municipal water supply. Jay Stratton will lead this hiking tour. Stratton is a CWC member who donated this preserve site to the Conservancy. He is a retired teacher, native of Westfield, and lifelong researcher of the plants, wildlife and people associated with Chautauqua Creek and Gorge. He and his family have founded the Ganowungo Trust, a fund at the Conservancy to conserve the Chautauqua Gorge and its old growth forests. This tour is free for CWC members. Waterproof footwear and insect repellent are recommended for this tour. Non-members are encouraged to make a $5 donation.
