EVANS - After an early loss, the Jamestown Giants rebounded and finished third at the recent Evans Youth Baseball Tournament.
The Giants, a Babe Ruth Under-8 squad, suffered a 19-9 setback to Lake View in their opening contest, but managed to win three of their final four games on the way to clinching a top-three finish.
Following the loss, Jamestown defeated host Evans, 10-2, knocked off Southwestern, 8-5, and edged the Hamburg Dawgs, 11-10, before suffering its final defeat of the weekend to eventual tournament champion East Aurora, 14-7.
John Torres led the squad in the opening game with a home run and a double; Tyler Giambelluca was 2-for-3 with an RBI; and the trio of Mike Boron, Sean O'Brien and Marshall Tantillo each collected three hits in as many at-bats.
In the victory over Evans, Brandon Lobb, Mason Chapman and Darius Freeney were 2-for-2 with a pair of runs apiece, while in the hard-fought victory over Southwestern it was Mason Carney and Darius Freeney leading the way when they delivered two hits with a double.
The Giants' battle with Hamburg went into extra innings after Jamestown rallied in the sixth to knot the game at 9-9 following clutch hits from Nate Torres and Chapman. Then, in the seventh, Freeney made a game-saving catch in left before John Torres ripped the game-winning double.
In the final game, John Torres was a bright spot as he drilled a grand slam - his second home run of the tournament.
