Sophie Evanczik was born July 28, 1918, in Jamestown. She grew up, graduated from Jamestown High School in 1937 and lived in Jamestown, later marrying Stanley Korcyl on June 8, 1940. In 1945, they moved from Jamestown to Bemus Point, settling on a small farm on Bayview Road, where they had eight children. For a few years they raised chickens while Stanley Korcyl worked for Malleable Iron Works and Watsons.
She worked at the family owned Bull Frog Inn and later at Korcyl's Restaurant in Bemus Point. She went on to drive a school bus for Bemus Point for several years. Stan Korcyl passed on in 1998.
Sophie enjoys gardening and reading when not being visited by her 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild who live across the United States. An open house birthday celebration was held in her honor for friends and family, Sunday at the Maple Springs Fire Hall.
