MAYVILLE - Adele N. Scriven, 98, of Willard Street, Jamestown, formerly of Mayville, died Sunday (July 28, 2013), in WCA Hospital.
She was born Sept. 14, 1914, in Mayville, the daughter of the late Ernest L. and Lois Kibbe Newton.
She graduated from Mayville High School in 1932. Adele owned and operated Mayville Pastry Shop with her husband for 20 years, retiring in 1976.
She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mayville, and attended First Lutheran Church in Jamestown. She was a member of Acanthus Chapter Order of Eastern Star where she was a past matron and where she had been an officer for more than 40 consecutive years, past president of the Mayville American Legion Auxiliary and past president of the Lake Chau-tauqua VFW Auxiliary in Mayville.
She is survived by her daughter, Kay (Roger) Edborg of Jamestown; five grandchildren: David (Lisa) Edborg of Rochester, Timothy (Lianne) Edborg of Jamestown, Todd (Katie) Edborg of Cary, N.C., Scott (the late Heather) Edborg of Saco, Maine, and Amy (Dan) Morando of Los Angeles, Calif.; 10 great- grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle W. Scriven, whom she married Dec, 31, 1935, in Ripley, N.Y., and who died Oct. 30, 1987; her stepfather, John Clarke; one sister, Dorothy N. Nee in 2001; and three brothers: Alwyn Newton in 1977, Wilson "Bud" Newton in 1967, and an infant brother, William Newton.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at the Freay Funeral Home, Mayville. The Rev. Dan Nagle will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Sa-turday (Aug. 17, 2013) pri-or to the service at the funeral home.
