MAYVILLE - A Mayville man has been committed to jail following an investigation into the December theft of a large coin collection.
Chautauqua County sheriff's deputies on Monday charged Randall Rothwell Jr., 24, of West Marvin Street, with third-degree burglary. Deputies said Rothwell allegedly broke into a Sea Lion Drive residence on Dec. 13 and took the coin collection.
The Mayville resident was identified following a months-long investigation.
Police said Rothwell allegedly took many of the coins to Jamestown, where he cashed them for dollars. Other coins were taken to a local pawn shop for money, deputies said in a police report.
The Sheriff's Office was able to recover some of the coins; it was not immediately clear the value of the coin collection, or how much was recovered.
Rothwell was taken into custody and arraigned on the burglary charge. He was committed to Chautauqua County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash, $40,000 property bond.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and further arrests are expected.
