This is a response to the Letter to the Editor from Tom Krasinski printed on July 10 in which he claimed that the now unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was "crafted to prevent another raid on the U.S. Treasury."
To the contrary, as reported in a study in 2004 by the bipartisan Congressional Budget Office, allowing same sex marriages to be recognized by the federal government would increase federal revenue $500 to $700 million per year from 2011 to 2014 and beyond. Further, one year after New York passed the Marriage Equality Act, same sex marriages created an economic benefit in New York City alone of $250 million.
