Sinclairville resident Carmen Cheney recently celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends at a surprise party given in her honor on Saturday, July 13, at the Park United Methodist Church in Sinclairville.
Carmen was born on July 18, 1923, in Goodman, Miss. While serving in the SPARS branch of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, Carmen met and married her beloved husband of 62 years, fellow Coast Guard member, George R. "Dick" Cheney, when both were stationed in Milwaukee.
Following military service, the couple settled in Dick's hometown in the Hamburg area. While raising their seven children, Carmen attended business school in Buffalo, performed office work at several area locations, including Buffalo White Motor Co., and actively participated in various school and community organizations.
In the early 1980s, the family relocated to the Sinclairville area where they resided until Dick passed away in 2007.
Carmen was a member of the Sinclairville 76ers, performed volunteer work at the Sinclairville Library, and was employed at Chautauqua Opportunities until she retired in 2004.
Carmen continues to reside in Sinclairville with family members.
