MAYVILLE - Chautauqua Institution will make substantial changes to its Visitors' Center, according to information received by the Town of Chautauqua board members during their July meeting Monday.
No cost estimate was made by the Institution for what it termed "selective demolition" on its building permit application submitted June 21.
The application gives a brief outline of the project to include "a new ceiling, removal of a wall" as well as numerous electrical system changes and additions. No date for the start of the work was provided on information provided by Town Clerk Sheila Hammond.
A swap of debris tonnage to neighboring Town of Westfield was approved unanimously by the board. Supervisor Don Emhardt said such exchanges are allowed by the Chautauqua County Land Bank. Westfield, he said, asked for 46 of Chautauqua's 100-ton allowance to dispose of the remains of a home partly destroyed by fire.
The county allows each municipality a designated amount of debris that may be disposed with no "tipping charge," according to Emhardt. Westfield, he said, needed the additional tonnage to escape the charges and will repay Chautauqua by moving the same amount to the credit of Chautauqua in 2014.
Emhardt said he foresaw no need for the town's full allotment this year.
The county land bank allotments, approved by New York state, are designed to help demolish the many decaying structures in the county, according to Emhardt.
Member Jim Kurtz said the master plan of the proposed new town park is complete, and the next step involves finding funds for the park to be located behind the town offices. Kurtz has maintained since the start of planning that it's expected the park will be completed in stages as private and public money is made available.
In other business the board approved a policy to back up town computers at an offsite location and require town officials and employees to adopt more complex computer passwords and change passwords once a calendar quarter.
A lease contract requiring the CSEA public employees union to pay $450 a month for space in the town office building was unanimously approved. The new lease will run for three years and represents a $50 a month increase.
An audit of town court finances was received and approved by the board.
