The second day of competition of the USA Track & Field Region 2 Junior Olympic Championships took place Friday at Strider Field and three members of the Chautauqua Striders came through with strong performances that earned them the opportunity to compete again on a national stage.
The top three finishers of each event advanced to the National Junior Olympics, which will be held at Irwin Belk Track and North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C., July 22-28.
In the 2,000-meter steeplechase for 15-16 boys, Southwestern's Ryan Hetrick finished in first place with a time of 6:53.81, edging Malo Gueguen from New Jersey, who posted a time of 6:55.37.

Another Southwestern athlete, Jordan Powers, he also had a big day, finishing first in the 17-18 2,000-meter steeplechase, posting a time of 6:33.25.
Randolph's McKenna Maycock took second place in the 15-16 girls heptathlon on Thursday and maintained her position in that event on Friday with a total of 3,896 points.
John Martin, also from Southwestern, finished in 10th place in the 17-18 javelin throw with a toss of 85-09.
