It's obvious the Fourth of July is the busiest time of the year for a business selling fireworks, but did you know it is the same for boating businesses.
The birthday celebration for the U.S. is the busiest time of the year for Chautauqua County businesses dealing with selling, renting or repairing boats.
Doug Barmore, Smith Boys employee, said it is always the busiest week of the year for the business located at 2310 W. Lake Road, Route 394, in Ashville.

"From May 15 to Labor day is the our busy time, but the busiest week is always the Fourth," he said.
Barmore said compared to other years, business isn't as good as it could have been.
"The weather didn't participate in it being the best Fourth of July," he said.
Barmore said business is up about 25 percent so far this summer, even though it doesn't seem like it should have increased.
"We haven't seen the flow of people. We are up in every angle of the business, but we don't see the people on the lake because the weather has not been ideal," he said.
Barmore said at Smith Boys people can have repairs done to their boat and motors, there are seven lines of boats for sale and people can rent pontoon or ski boats. For more information on what Smith Boys can provide, call 763-0140.
Shawn Proctor, Ready About Sailing store manager/salesman, said business has been good for the Fourth, unlike earlier in the summer.
"It has been a slow start, but summer seems to be here now. The weather is the important part," he said.
At Ready About Sailing, 32 Venice St., Celoron, there is a full marina for docking, a repair shop and people can purchase both power and sailing boats. Proctor said the business caters to sailing boats, which includes lessons.
"We have a full sailing school that can vary from one-on-one lessons to a classroom setting for certification," he said. "We have group sailing lessons where we take people out on the water in Bemus Point. We also sell gasoline at two locations and have two restaurants. We have a concession stand at Long Point State Park and here we have the Quarterdeck, where we feature homemade pies on the weekends."

Peter Wiemer, We Wan Chu owner, said he mostly deals with cottages, but also provides boating services too. So far, he said the summer has been good.
"We've been really busy. It is the best May and June we've ever had," he said. "We are happy with the tourism here in Chautauqua County."
Wiemer said expanding promotional materials to Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo has helped the business this summer.
"We are up a good tick higher for this Fourth of July week," he said. "Before we've had openings in the past for cottages, but this year we don't. I think a lot of the increase in business is tied to our new swimming pool. When we've had rainy, bad weather, customers are still happy because of the pool."
We Wan Chu is located at 4442 W. Lake Road, Chautauqua. For more information, call 789-3383.
