"We call them 'Secret Gardens' because they are largely hidden from the street, but with this announcement, their locations are no longer secret!"
With those words, Merle Szydlo, the organizer of Jamestown Audubon's 2013 Secret Gardens Tour, revealed where all six gardens will be on the Saturday, June 29, Secret Gardens tour:
Janet Brown - 4289 Cowing Road, Lakewood;
Jamestown Audubon has announced the locations of the six gardens on its 2013 Secret Gardens Tour. Rain or shine, the event will be on Saturday, June 29. A Jamestown garden from the 2012 tour is pictured above.
Kathy Holdridge - 27 Dearborn Street, Jamestown;
Kay and Gary Johnson - 4107 Nutt Road, Busti;
Sharon Lisciandro - 140 Winch Road, Lakewood;
Ruth Lundin - 4307 Nutt Road, Busti; and
Linda McCallum - 62 Hanford Avenue, Jamestown.
Szydlo said all the gardeners are working hard so their displays will be perfect for the event. Rain or shine, the tour is from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
With six gardens this year, the diversity of the offerings is greater than ever - gardens measured in feet and gardens measured in acres, country gardens and urban gardens, wildlife habitats and a roof garden. Audubon nature guides will be available to help spot the Meadowlarks and Bobolinks in the unmowed field in the Johnson garden, so binoculars are welcome. Ruth Lundin, Audubon president, will be on hand to explain how her roof garden is part of a water retention project that includes rain barrels, a permeable patio and a fledgling rain garden.
Sharon Lisciandro demonstrates how to survive a bulldozer that excavated the plumbing, and the sweep of Janet Brown's spacious backyard can be admired from her lovely gazebo. Linda McCallum's vegetables and Kathy Holdridge's very secret garden add to the tour.
Since the tickets provide directions, parking recommendations and a map for finding the gardens, it is convenient to purchase them ahead of time at the Audubon Center & Sanctuary, Four Seasons Nursery, Lakeview Gardens, Peterson Farm, Secret Gardens Flower Shop, or Stillwater Garden Market in Jamestown; Mike's Nursery in Lakewood; or Robert's Nursery in Falconer.
Tickets are $10 and are also available at each garden on the day of the tour.
A Google map of all the gardens and ticket outlets will be on Audubon's website, jamestownaudubon.org, prior to the tour.
