Jamestown Audubon’s 2013 Secret Gardens Tour on Saturday, June 29, now boasts six gardens, two each in Jamestown, Lakewood and Busti. A Jamestown garden from Audubon’s 2012 Tour is pictured above.
"The variety of this year's gardens is unprecedented on our tour," said Merle Szydlo, tour organizer. "We have gardens measured in feet, and gardens measured in acres. We have country gardens and urban gardens. We have wildlife habitats and a unique, environmentally-friendly home whose roof garden is part of a water retention project. We even have a gardener who fosters felines for the local Humane Society, so you could come home with garden ideas and a new friend."
Bird lovers should bring their binoculars with them, as Audubon nature guides will be available to help spot the Meadowlarks and Bobolinks in the unmowed field in the Johnson garden.
Ruth Lundin will be on hand to explain how her roof garden is part of a water retention project that includes rain barrels and a permeable patio. Don't miss the magic viewing window that lets you peer into the unusual construction of her unique home.
Rain or shine, the tour is from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The $10 tickets are available at the Audubon Center & Sanctuary as well as Four Seasons Nursery, Lakeview Gardens, Peterson Farm, Secret Gardens Flower Shop and Stillwater Garden Market in Jamestown; Mike's Nursery in Lakewood; and Robert's Nursery in Falconer. Tickets can also be purchased at the participating gardens on the day of the tour.
The ticket will provide directions, parking recommendations, and a map for finding the gardens. A Google map of all the gardens and ticket outlets will also be on Audubon's website, jamestownaudubon.org/, prior to the tour.
