CHAUTAUQUA - The NJCAA Division III National Golf Championships take place on the Lake Course at Chautauqua Golf Club and on Thursday that is exactly what it was - a lake.

The tournament's third round started at 9 a.m. in a pouring rain that never stopped. By 11:15 a.m. the 88 golfers were called off the course because it was becoming unplayable.
''The No. 1 tee box was totally under water,'' tournament director Greg Fish said. ''On No. 9 green we had water coming down, 18 green was soaked. We had standing water all over the place.''
Not only were the golfers called off the course, but they were also sent back to their accommodations.
''I got them back (off the course) and said let's get them 'home' and get them dry and let's reconvene at 2 o'clock,'' Fish said. ''We all got back at 2 and it didn't let up. It needed some time to drain and it just kept coming.''
So all of Thursday's third-round play was scratched and the tournament will now be a 54-hole competition with a champion crowned after today's round that begins at 9 a.m.
''Tomorrow we go 18 holes and we have a 54-hole tournament,'' Fish said.
There has never been a round canceled in the 13 years the NJCAA Division III National Golf Championships have been held at Chautauqua. However, it was a 54-hole event in 1991 at Midland, Texas, and in 1994 and 1995 at Greensboro, N.C.
After leading by six shots following the first round, the host Jamestown Community College Jayhawks fired a 309 on Wednesday for a 36-hole total of 606 and came into Thursday's play with a one-shot lead into over Vincennes University from Vincennes, Ind.
In third place is defending champion Minnesota State Community and Technical College from Fergus Falls, Minn., with 614. Sandhills CC from Pinehurst, N.C., is fourth with a 616 and Georgia Military College from Milledgeville, Ga., is fifth with a 617 in the 12-team field.

The cancellation of Thursday's round was a disappointment for JCC coach Brett Mucheck.
''We were playing good and not that I want to see anyone do badly, but the other couple of teams (trying to catch JCC) were both struggling a little,'' he said. ''We had definitely gained some ground.''
He added, ''That's all right, I'm not upset. We go into the final day with a one-shot lead. That's pretty good going into the last day with a lead; I'll take that.''
The Jayhawks were playing well because the rainy conditions didn't seem to bother them.
''We were handling it better,'' Mucheck said. ''Drew (Chaddock) got through nine holes and was even par. Brenton (Wilcox) was through eight holes and was one or two over. Like I said, we play great in the rain.''
Chaddock has a 36-hole total of 147 and is in a tie for third in the individual scores and teammate Jake Yartz is at 150 and tied for sixth.
JCC will start on the front nine again today in the last five threesomes. Jordy Farnham will be first at 10:20 a.m. followed by Andrew Bird at 10:28, Wilcox at 10:36, Yartz at 10:44 and Chaddock at 10:52.
