BUSTI - With storms threatening the World Of Outlaw Late Models on Saturday night at Stateline Speedway, 27 strong took to the 1/3-mile track for time trials to set the heat lineups.
Local Super Late Model veteran Ron Davies set a fast time at 16.155 seconds and 74.206 mph. Heat winners were Ron Davies, Dave Hess Jr., and Boom Briggs. Clint Smith won the last-chance race. Shane Clanton took control of the World of Outlaw event early in the race, passing Boom Briggs, the early leader. Local favorite Mike Knight chased Clanton through the remainder of the race, but could not make the pass. Knight turned the fastest time during the race. Darrell Lanigan was third followed by another local driver, John Volpe, with the drive of his young career, fourth. Davies finished seventh and the local Outlaw regular, Chub Frank, was 10th. It was the fourth appearance by the Outlaws with a different winner each time. Dick Barton won the first one and though starting last finished in the 14th spot. After going to a backup car and starting last, World of Outlaw point leader Josh Richards finished sixth.

Jim Frank won the Crate Late feature, his first Crate win, taking over after the defending champion, Damian Bidwell and Bob Dorman tangled for an early race caution. Bidwell came back from the rear of the field for a second-place finish.
It was all about second in the E-Mod feature as Rich Michael Sr. took control from the pole and never looked back for his first win of the season.
Jake Finnerty won the Limited Late feature, his first of the season. Point leader Chris Ottaway had started alongside Finnerty, but was turned into the back stretch wall and collected Mike Moore, Bill Reeves and Jermin Strickland.
Point leader Josh Richards had to use his backup losing his sixth starting spot and forced to the rear of the field for the 50-lap World-of-Outlaw main. Davies and Briggs were on the front row with Knight and Hess Jr. in row two. Davies won the charge into turn one, but the yellow quickly flew when Bump Hedman, Andy Boozel, Smith tangled up in turn one.
The complete restart featured Briggs the first time around with Davies in second followed by Knight, Dave Scott and Hess. Briggs was able to get a 10 car-length lead by lap five with Davies two car lengths ahead of Knight. Frank and Morgan Bagley caused the second caution of the event with five of the 50 laps complete. Frank and Hess pulled into the pits during the caution. The top five for the restart were Briggs, Davies, Knight, Scott and Clanton.
A spin by Dick Barton caused the third yellow. Frank reported back to the speedway as the green flew and Hess pulled back into the pits. Briggs remained the leader with Knight now second followed by Clanton and Davies. Scott was fifth. A lap-nine incident collected Barton and Bagley for caution No. 4.
Clanton took the lead from Briggs on the restart, bringing Knight along. Briggs continued to slide back as Scott took third and Davies fourth. Jason Dupont became a top-five car on lap 15. Briggs pitted on lap 18. Tim McCreadie slowed on the speedway, causing caution five. Eighteen of the 50 laps were complete. Clanton, Knight, Scott and Darrel Lanigan were the restart leaders.
Clanton continued to lead after the restart, but could not shake Knight. At the halfway point, Clanton had nearly a straightaway lead over Knight with Scott five lengths back in third. Clanton had caught the tailend of the field on lap 32 and Chris Hackett pulled into the infield. Scott slowed to a stop near the pit stop and the yellow flew for the sixth time. Clanton remained the leader followed by Lanigan, Knight and new kid on the block, Volpe.
Lanigan and Knight continued to fight for the runner-up spot and Volpe a few car lengths back in fourth. Knight fought back for runner-up, gaining a couple of car lengths on Lanigan. Clanton hugged the inside through the remaining laps with Knight scraping the concrete on the high side and Lanigan back two car lengths on the bottom. Clanton took the white with a clear track and commanding lead over Knight. The surprise of the race was Volpe with a fourth-place finish.
Dave Shagla led lap one of the Crate feature with fourth-starting Zach Carley right behind. Caution flew at the end of two for a two-car skirmish in turn two involving defending champion Bidwell and Dorman. The two leaders tangled at the restart immediately, bringing caution back over the speedway, and Scott Gurdak spun into the infield and had to be towed to the pits during the caution.
Jim Frank took the lead on lap four. Kevin Hill made hard contact with the turn three concrete for yellow number two allowing the field to reel in Frank. Frank, Matt Harvey and Bruce Hordusky Jr. were the restart leaders. Skip Jackson did a lone spin with 11 laps complete for yellow three. Hordusky led Frank by a nose on lap 13, then, one lap later, suffered a mechanical failure followed quickly by yellow four for debris on the speedway. Frank remained the leader, but Bidwell was now second with Ryan Scott third. Frank cruised to the checkers his first of the season.
Rich Michael Sr. was on the pole for the E-Mod feature and grabbed the early lead. The race stayed green for the first five laps, but a spin by Brian Wilson brought out the first caution. Michael, Nathan Hill and Ron Seeley were the leaders. Two laps later, a spin by Leonard Enos collected Brian Fardink and Brian Wilson. Seeley lost a couple of spots as Greg Johnson settled into third followed by Chad Carlson in fourth. Right after the halfway flags, the caution appeared for the third time. Chevy Sweet had spun in turn two. On lap 13, Wilson stopped in turn one for caution four. Point leader John Woodward Jr. moved up into the top four as the race wound down, passing Johnson for third and was followed by a spin by Johnson. The field had closed with Michael for the remaining four laps. Justin Carlson took third from Woodward on the final lap as Michael took the checkers.
Jake Finnerty and Chris Ottaway were on the front row for Limited Late feature with John Cline Jr. and Mike Moore in row two. Point leader Steve Kania was 11th. Ottaway, last week's winner, was the first back to the stripe with Finnerty second and Cline third. Ottaway began to fade turning the lead over to Finnerty. Ottaway was turned into the back straight fence and, as Ottaway sat, Mike Moore was caught up along with Jermin Strickland and Bill Reeves. After the restart Cline spun for caution two. Finnerty, Nathan Short and Steve Moynihan were the leaders. Finnerty won the race his first of the season.
