ITHACA - Two Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association golfers are within striking distance of the lead after the first round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships.
Danny Weimer of Silver Creek fired a 2-over 74 on the Cornell university-Robert Trent Jones Golf Course and is in a four-way tie for fourth place, three strokes behind leader Alex Ferrante of Nyack High School (Section 1). Five shots back and in a five-way tie for 13th is Randolph's Nolan Ditcher, who shot a 76.
Other area golfers in the field and representing Section 6 are Fredonia's Joe Conti and Maple Grove's Wil Lockwood. Conti shot an 84 and is in a seven-way tie for 57th, while Lockwood finished with an 85 and in four-way tie for 64th.
The local golfers qualified for states on May 20 at Diamond Hawk Golf Course in Cheektowaga. For Ditcher, it is his second trip to the states.
The tournament will conclude today. The winning section will be determined by taking the best daily eight scores out of nine from each section and adding them up. The section with the lowest two-day total will be declared the overall winner.
The state's all-star team will consist of 20 players and ties with the lowest two-day total score.
The top six overall finishers will then be invited to represent NYSPHSAA at the New York State Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations event at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale on June 10.
