GERRY - The hot weather evidently made the string of bulls from the Painted Pony Rodeo very angry as they tossed cowboys high and wide in the first of two performances in the first Bulls and Barrels event on Friday night at the Gerry rodeo grounds with 35 bulls bucking out of the chute gates.
Shane Stiffler of Houtzler, Pa., had the top score of the night on a bull named JC from the Painted Pony Rodeo, scoring 86 points for a payoff of $2,020.80. The second highest scoring ride was by Steve Troyer of Harrisville, Pa., on Buckin-B Cattle Company's Water Stick, a 77-point effort, which paid him $1,347.20.
The cowgirls barrel racing saw 30 ladies entering with Lauren Wagner of McClure, Pa., posting the fastest time of 13.50 seconds, which paid her $397. A Waverly, N.Y., cowgirl, Tina Larabee, took second with a time of 13.62 to win $329. Kim Bucklietner, New Bethlehem, Pa., placed third at 13.69 seconds, taking home $260.

Bert Davis, the Coppertown Clown, delighted the audience with his Muttley Crew, a group of 10 dogs he and his wife Frannie have rescued from shelters across the country and trained to do all sorts of tricks, including one dog which walks across the arena on its hind legs in tribute to our wounded soldiers who have lost limbs in war.
The event will conclude tonight as again more than 35 bull riders and two dozen cowgirls will be competing in the arena six miles north of Jamestown on Route 60 for $5,000 in total prize money. The midway, featuring numerous vendors offering Western wear and pony rides along with numerous food items, including the famous beef barbecue sandwiches will open at 5 p.m. Tickets for the event are $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 4-12. Entrance to the midway and parking are free.
All proceeds benefit the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department. The traditional 69th annual PRCA rodeo is scheduled for five performances July 31 through Aug. 3.
