YORKSHIRE - A week from now at least five area athletes will be taking their considerable talents to Middletown to compete in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Zach Jackson and Chris Doubek of Randolph, Corey Wefing of Maple Grove, Matt Civilette of Fredonia and Mackenzie Wright of Falconer each extended their season and guaranteed themselves a trip east during the opening day of the Section 6 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Pioneer Central School on Friday.
The state qualifier concludes today.
Clockwise, from top left, Maple Grove’s Corey Wefing leads the pack in the 3,200 meters on his way to victory; Randolph’s Zach Jackson motors around the turn in the 800 meters on his way to a second-place finish; and Jamestown’s Summer Haight competes in the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles Friday at Pioneer Central School. Wefing and Jackson qualified for the states.

Though only Wefing and Civilette won their respective Division 2 events, the remaining three qualified by virtue of recording both a second-place finish and a state-qualifying time.
Wefing, who will be making his second straight appearance at the state meet, won the 3,200 meters, crossing the line in 9:38.54, ahead of rival and second-place finisher Sean Phillips' time of 9:39.70.
Civilette, meanwhile, leapt a whopping 44 feet to capture the triple jump.
Wright placed second in the long jump. The Falconer junior soared 17-2, a distance that snapped former Lady Golden Falcon Erin Beach's 2009 record-setting mark of 16-9.
Cheektowaga sophomore Shawnn Foster edged Wright by 2 inches for the victory.
Jackson was second in the 800-meter run when he finished in 1:57.87, just five-tenths of a second behind winner Seamus Degan of City Honors, but still under the state-qualifying time of 1:58.14.
Rounding out the list of first-day qualifiers was Jackson's teammate, Doubek, who cleared 13 feet, 6 inches for second place in the pole vault.
Justyn Haines of Albion won the event (14-0).
Other competitors who had solid showings, but found themselves coming up just shy of qualifying for the state meet were Megan Marsh of Maple Grove, who was second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.25, just 21-tenths of a second off the qualifying mark, and Lauren Reyda of Fredonia, who took third in the 3,000 (10:51).
