Joseph Robert O'Neill, "J.R." passed away peace-fully surrounded by his wife and family on May 29, 2013, at Bay Pine VA Med-ical Center, St. Petersburg, Fla.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marcella Kantoski O'Neill; daughters: Emily O'Neill, Sarasota, Fla., Mary K. O'Neill, Seguin, Texas; Pa-tricia Hector (Richard), Bradenton, Fla., and Christine (Dave) Armuth, Columbus, Ind.; a son, Daniel (Linda) O'Neill, Cape Coral, Fla.; eight granddaughters: Erin (Steve) Rauh, Shannon (Kevin) Schaal and Megan Bunting all of Cape Coral, Fla., Kelly (Derek) Merritt of Walworth, N.Y., Jennifer (Jon) Hurt and Katie (Robert) Schadenfroh, all from Columbus, Ind., Megan Hector, Atlanta, Ga., and Clare Hector, Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a grandson, David Armuth, Columbus, Ind. J.R. was also blessed with 12 great-grandchildren. He was affectionately known as "Pop Pop."
He and his wife Marcella had recently made their home with his son and daughter-in-law at 1001 NE 15th St., Cape Coral, FL 33909.
He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick, in 1949; both of his parents; four brothers: Gerald, Jack, Don and Paul; and most recently his son-in-law Col. (Ret) N. Joe Thompson in July 2012.
J.R. was born on Feb. 21, 1925, to John Raymond O'Neill and Emily Ethel Hartshorne, in Philipsburg, Pa. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in Iwo Jima in World War II. After returning from the war, he at-tended St. Bonaventure University, Mount St. Mary's College, and NYU where he received his Bachelor of Science in phy-sical therapy.
In 1953, He moved his family to Jamestown, N.Y., to set up his roots. He esta-blished a cerebral palsy clinic and a private physi-cal therapy practice. He was also employed by Jamestown General Hospital and Fenton Park Nursing Home. After retiring as a physical therapist, he was managing partner of the New Penn Golf Cars.
He was a longtime member of St. John R.C. Church in Jamestown.
J.R. loved life. He, more than anything, loved his wife and family. He was an avid golfer, hunter and outdoorsman.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by GriffithCline Funeral Home, Bradenton, Fla. Interment will be at Sarasota National Cemetery.
